Biotechnology
What is biotechnology? Biotechnology is the science for this century. The term brings to mind many different assumptions and ideologies. For one it seeks of developing new types of animals. Others think out of almost unlimited sources of human therapeutic drugs. Many others used to define it as envision the possibility of growing crops that are more nutritious and naturally pest-resistant to feed a rapidly growing world population. The word biotechnology is having a vast storage of biological experiments and the technologies related to biology. It can be defined as any technique that uses living organisms or their products to make or modify a product, to improve plants or animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific uses. Biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life. Biotechnology has formed the basis of learning about people and diseases. Biotechnology has also underpinned the development of treatments. The practice of using plants, animals and micro-organism such as bacteria as well as biological processes - such as the ripening of fruit or the bacteria that break down compost - to some benefit. It refers to the use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human environment.
Cloning is the best example of today’s modern biotechnology. We have been cloning plants for centuries. whenever a leaf is excised from a violet plant and placed in soil to grow a new plant, cloning has occurred. By biotechnology, nanotechnology and other sciences, it is useful to harness these traits at the atomic level to develop safe and beneficial crops, medical treatments, biofuels and household products. With its advances, we are on the first part of a great journey. We cannot deny with the fact that any living organisms have evolved such an enormous spectrum of biological capabilities means that by choosing appropriate organisms it is possible to obtain a wide variety of substances, many of which are useful to man as food, fuel and medicines. Over the past 30 years, biologists have increasingly applied the methods of physics, chemistry and mathematics in order to gain precise knowledge, at the molecular level, of how living cells make these substances. Humans have expanded their understanding of the biosphere by journeying into space and exploring the depths of the ocean. We have not only been able to look at the surrounding universe and the depths below with the advancement of tools and techniques, but we also have been able to live there. Biotechnology is utilizing the sciences of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computers, and information technology to develop tools and products that hold great promise. Humans have spent thousands of years selecting for and cultivating the best traits nature has to offer. Today, we are not only doing the physical manipulation at the visual level but also on the molecular level. In modern or molecular biotechnology, we physically select the desired characteristic at the molecular level and add it to the organism's genetic makeup.
