The main objective of this particular aspect of physical chemistry is to highlight the great variety of interesting phenomena involve ions in aqueous solutions- examples are provided by many reactions and processes in natural waters and biological systems. Some additions to the thermodynamic methods for the treatment of pure substances and molecular mixtures of these substances must be made so that ionic solutions can be dealt with.

We begin, in the first part of this aspect, by studying the experimental basis that led to the now familiar idea that electrolytes, i.e. acids, bases, and salts, are more or less dissociated in aqueous solution and that the ions present act to some extent as free, independent particles. This interpretation of aqueous solutions of electrolytes is akin to the simple kinetic-molecular theory of ideal gases.

Many refinements of this simple theory are necessary as more experimental results are considered and as the finer details of the results on which the simple theory is based are recognized. Thus, in a way that now parallels in the van der Waals elaborations of the simple kinetic-molecular theory, two additional aspects of the behaviour of ions in solution are introduced. These are concerned with the interactions of the ions with the solvent and the interactions of the ions with each other. The second part of the aspect is devoted to these refinements of the simple ionic model. Finally, we return to the thermodynamic treatment of ionic solution and deal, particularly, with ionic equilibria.
